Fireboy and Watergirl: A Unique Sidescroller

Browser-based games always have their own unique charm to them, especially when it reminds you of the games that date back to out Windows 95 days. Fireboy and Watergirl is one game that has managed to give you a brilliant nostalgic trip with its simple, yet highly addictive game that is sure to keep you playing for hours.

Fireboy and Watergirl is a unique game that makes you control two characters at once to get through a side scroller filled with unique contraptions and puzzles to figure out. The game can only be played on the pc, and unfortunately is not viable on tablets or mobiles because of the manner in which it plays. When you enter the website, you get to see three unique titles all sharing a certain amount of similarities between them. While the settings might be different, the core concept of the game remains the same.

The moment you start the game, you see the duo, both together in the setting that you have selected. You are immediately given a prompt about the controls of the game. To move Fireboy, you need to move around with the arrow keys, and to move Watergirl, you need to move around with W, A, S, and D. These are pretty much all the buttons you need for this game. The game has multiple levels that you go through as you progress through the game, and there is a feature that lets you revisit levels if you want to try them out again.

The side scroller is complete with a series of platforms that have traps along the way. In the beginning, you are shown puddles of water and fire, fire being neutral towards Fireboy and deadly towards Watergirl, and the puddle of water, which is deadly to Fireboy and neutral to Watergirl. Additionally, there are green puddles that are deadly to both. Most puddles tend to have a few gems on top of them which can either be red or blue. Red gems can only be picked up by Fireboy while blue gems can only be picked up by Watergirl.

The traps of the game might start out simple but tend to get more complex as the levels go on. In the beginning, you are made to push a few buttons to be able to access certain areas, but as you progress, the traps get more complex and require a lot more understanding of the general setting.

Each of the Fireboy and Watergirl games has a story around them that changes the traps and environment around which our two protagonists need to maneuver around. The first few games are the most basic version of the game, with not much of a story to go with it. The third installment sees the duo roaming through an ice castle, discovering its unique assets. The fourth game has the two roaming through a crystal castle while the fifth installment of the game has the duo roaming through a mysterious forest filled with new dangers.
